چکیده

The ratio of soil organic carbon stock (SOC) to annual input gives an estimate the mean residence time that enters (MRTOC). It indicates how efficiently biomass can be transformed into SOC, which is particular relevance for mitigating climate change by means SOC storage. There have been few comprehensive studies MRTOC and their drivers, these mainly restricted global scale, on climatic drivers dominate. This study used unique combination regional-scale cropland grassland topsoil (0–30 cm) data average site-specific OC derived from German Agricultural Soil Inventory elucidate main MRTOC. Explanatory variables related composition other soil-forming factors were explain variability in a machine-learning approach. On average, entering agricultural topsoils had MRT 21.5 ± 11.6 years, with grasslands (29.0 11.2 n = 465) having significantly higher than croplands (19.4 10.7, 1635). was explained proportion root-derived inputs soils, most important variable explaining at regional scale. properties such as clay content, group, C:N groundwater level also important, indicating driven site composition. However, great importance indicated actively managed, maximization root being straightforward extend assimilated C remains consequently increase stocks.

Selective Sorption of Dissolved Organic Carbon Compounds by Temperate Soils

BACKGROUND Physico-chemical sorption onto soil minerals is one of the major processes of dissolved organic carbon (OC) stabilization in deeper soils. The interaction of DOC on soil solids is related to the reactivity of soil minerals, the chemistry of sorbate functional groups, and the stability of sorbate to microbial degradation. This study was conducted to examine the sorption of diverse OC ...

Living roots magnify the response of soil organic carbon decomposition to temperature in temperate grassland

Increasing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2 ) concentration is both a strong driver of primary productivity and widely believed to be the principal cause of recent increases in global temperature. Soils are the largest store of the world's terrestrial C. Consequently, many investigations have attempted to mechanistically understand how microbial mineralisation of soil organic carbon (SOC) to CO2...

Carbon Sequestration in Agricultural Soils

Although it is common to alternate between till and no-till practices, past research has considered farmers’ tillage options to be limited to the dichotomous choice of whether or not to switch to a long-term no-till regime. This paper expands farmers’ options and models their choices of tillage frequency. Less frequent tilling sequesters more carbon but permits a greater accumulation of weeds, ...

Projected loss of soil organic carbon in temperate agricultural soils in the 21st century: effects of climate change and carbon input trends

Climate change and stagnating crop yields may cause a decline of SOC stocks in agricultural soils leading to considerable CO2 emissions and reduced agricultural productivity. Regional model-based SOC projections are needed to evaluate these potential risks. In this study, we simulated the future SOC development in cropland and grassland soils of Bavaria in the 21(st) century. Soils from 51 stud...

Mean age of carbon in fine roots from temperate forests and grasslands with different management

Fine roots are the most dynamic portion of a plant’s root system and a major source of soil organic matter. By altering plant species diversity and composition, soil conditions and nutrient availability, and consequently belowground allocation and dynamics of root carbon (C) inputs, land-use and management changes may influence organic C storage in terrestrial ecosystems. In three German region...
